Challenges with the Reboot of Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider is Back

In 2003, Lara Croft’s Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life hit movie theaters and was generally a flop in the eyes of video game lovers everywhere. Since then, we haven’t seen anything from the series. This March, Tomb Raider is back with a vengeance. Alicia Vikander plays a younger Lara Croft as she attempts to uncover the secrets behind her father’s disappearance – a plot line dear to the hearts of many.

This year’s release of Tomb Raider will explore Lara Croft’s journey as she transforms from a reckless, young girl into the iconic, fearless adventurer familiar to the gaming community. From designs of the characters to action sequences, fans of the series have already recognized that Tomb Raider will be incorporating elements from the video game.

Challenge with the Reboot of Tomb Raider

According to an article by Nerdist, “Hollywood has seemed to mastered the art of comic books, novels, and horrifying true stories for the big screen” but struggles “when it comes to video game movies” (Source). Many movie goers are predisposed to skepticism with the stigma associated with movie adaptations from video games.

With Oscar-winning actress, Alicia Vikandar as Lara Croft, it seems that the reboot is prepared to face the challenges head on. Vikander, like many of us, grew up playing these games and her passion for the role will hopefully prove helpful to the series. In an interview, Vikander explains that her goal was to capture the heart of Lara. She worked hard to accurately portray the essence of the character and the series while providing a story with a reality closer to our own.

15:17 to Paris

Clint Eastwood is known for his grit, outspoken nature, and self-efficacious movies. He’s back at it again with his latest 15:17 to Paris, a story of three men who discover a terrorist plot on a train to Paris. This time, he has the three heroes of the terrorist attack play themselves in the blockbuster hit.

The Heroes Behind the Title

Three friends were on a train to Paris when a man carrying an AK47, “the world’s most abundant fire arm…used for swiftly killing on a large scale,” launched an attack on innocent civilians traveling to France (Source).

When 25-year-old, Ayoub el-Khazzani boarded the train and shortly after the train left with 500 passengers, chaos ensued. Gun shots alerted the three friends, Anthony Sadler, 23, Alek Skarlatos, 22, and Spencer Stone, 23, who ultimately charged the perpetrator with nothing on them but bravery.

More about the 15:17 to Paris

Casting the three soldiers and others that were actually there that terrifying day brings a unique element to the screen. With accuracy and authenticity, Eastwood and the cast tell the story of courage that saved hundreds.

The three say that it’s their “responsibility to take the message and be responsible with it and spread it as much as we can so we don’t waste the opportunity that [God] gave us…The fact that we’re living, we’re meant to spread the story and it’s meant to touch people, and we’re the three people that were chosen to do that.”

In an article by the Guardian, Skarlatos said “It was act or die. There wasn’t any time to think about anything, because if you didn’t do anything, you’d end up dead. We just kind of went for it. We all thought we were going to die anyway; we were on a moving train with nowhere to go” (Source).

This inspiring story is sure to hit home in the hearts of the audience. 15:17 to Paris opens February 9th.

Paddington 2

The second film in the Paddington series is about a mischievous, charming bear who spreads joy and marmalade wherever he goes.

Paddington 2 hasn’t even hit theaters in the United States and it has already hit $95 million worldwide. When the first Paddington came out, it cost about $55m to produce and the  “unexpected charmer snagged $76m domestic and $268m worldwide three years ago” (Forbes).

Paddington Plot

The first movie follows a young bear whose Peruvian rainforest home is destroyed by an earthquake. In search of a new home, the bear makes his way to England and is dubbed ‘Paddington,” after the London train station. He finds a home with the Brown family as he runs into random qualms, one of which is a determined taxidermist who has plans for him and his rare hide.

What is Paddington 2 About?

The sequel picks up as Paddington anticipates his Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday. He looks for the perfect gift and finds it in an antique shop. Paddington finds a rare pop-up book and takes odd jobs to earn money to buy it. During that time, the book is stolen and Paddington is blamed for its disappearance. According to an article in the village voice, “both 2015’s Paddington and now its sequel, Paddington 2, embody a kind of extreme empathy. They have their moments of spectacle — laugh-out-loud sight gags and genuinely exciting set pieces — but they’re also dominated by an overwhelming sense of kindness” (Source).

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Two decades after the original Jumanji movie, the beloved board game has entered the world of technology and evolved into an (actually) immersive video game.

In Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, four high school kids are assigned to detention. As they clean the dingy basement of their school, they discover an old video game console. When they turn it on, they get sucked into the game and become adult avatars as they explore and attempt to beat the game.

Jumanji Characters

When they four students are sucked into the console, there is a Freaky Friday style change that happens to each of the kids: they are transformed to bodies that are very different than what they are used to.

Jack Black plays a young teenage girl name Bethany. She is completely addicted to her cell phone, herself, and the internet and turns into a short, bearded, male cryptographer. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the personal of a skinny nerd who has transformed into a buff explorer. While a jock loses a foot and a half of his height and becomes a zoologist played by Kevin Hart and a bookish, shy girl becomes a talented, gruff powerhouse of a woman.

In order to escape the game, they have to embrace their alter egos and each other as they learn to work together as a team.

What to Expect

Naturally, most people are hesitant when it comes to a sequel of a classic movie. But, what makes Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle appealing is that it doesn’t rely solely on the nostalgia of the 22-year-old predecessor. It has a standalone hook where 4 kids get sucked into a new world. With a new take on the beloved classic, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle swings into theaters with an all-star cast of comedic and likable stars.

Spiderman Homecoming - Free Facepainting

There is nothing quite as jarring as the merging of worlds. Whether it’s your new beau or belle meeting your family or eating chocolate covered bacon, it’s hard to forget when you see or taste something you have never experienced before- when two different worlds come together.

That’s kind of what it was like when Marvel dove into the world of live-action remakes. Bringing comics to life is bringing the fantastical into reality. The fantasy becomes tangible and is no longer simply a fantasy.

People are very protective when an actor or actress is cast as their beloved comic book character. The young Spiderman makes an appearance in Captain America and luckily, the new Spidey quickly won us over. But, what we really love about Tom Holland’s roll is how he perfectly embodies the awkward tween persona that is as lovable as a puppy.

In Spiderman Homecoming, Peter lands an ‘internship’ with Stark Enterprises. Tony Stark, who is also Iron Man, begins to teach young Peter the ways of an Avenger as the young hero begins to embrace his new-found identity. With every teenager, there is a natural rebellion that occurs and becomes a big theme throughout the movie. As Peter learns more about his powers, he attempts to balance school life with his super hero responsibilities. Soon, he is put to the test when the evil Vulture threatens everything he loves.

Critics are raving about this new film and it is sure to be a huge hit. In fact, to celebrate we are having ANOTHER summer event at Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theater. We will be having a retro red-carpet event with FREE face painting and photos with Spiderman! From 6-8pm on July 7th & 8th.

At Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theater, we believe that a movie experience should be more than simply seeing a movie. It’s a memory. We want to help make your time with us a fun and unforgettable night for your family.

Not only are you getting an entertainment filled night, you get two movies for the price of one! And we have the coolest combo of movies around: Spiderman Homecoming and Wonder Woman. This is a once in a lifetime chance to watch these incredible super heroes back-to-back on the big screen! Check out our show times for Spiderman Homecoming and Wonder Woman here!

Minion Meet & Greet for Despicable Me 3

Despicable Me 3 is coming out this Friday and it’s one of the biggest family films of the summer. Gru is back and better than ever with his 3 adorable girls and his minions that function like his 3000 additional children.

Despicable Me 3 is the 3rd movie installment in the Despicable Me series. The franchise “has grossed over $955 million domestically and 2.7 billion worldwide with the first three movies (including spinoff Minions).” Despicable Me 3 was an inevitable next step and is expected to smash the box office.

What’s Despicable Me 3 About?

After failing to capture the most wanted villain Balthazaar Bratt, Gru and his wife Lucy are fired from the Anti-Villain League. Soon after, he learns that he has a long-lost twin. With an abundance of new found time, Gru travels to Freedonia to meet Dru. Dru is a blonde-haired version of Gru and tries to convince Gru to join the dark side again. Sibling rivalry ensues and the lovable villain gone good, Gru, has to face his sibling, a former 80s child star villain, and what he wants his own future to look like.

Steve Carrell plays dual roles in this movie as both Dru and Gru. South Park’s star Trey Parker joins the all-star cast of Kristen Wiig Miranda Cosgrove, Russel Brand, Jenny Slate and more! There is so much to love about animated movies and their random love of hodgepodge casting.

Alien: Covenant - Alien Universe Timeline

When Alien hit theaters in 1979, it blew up the alien archetype and revolutionized the science fiction genre by taking a step away from the friendly, space imagery to a scarier perspective of space. With the upcoming release of the sixth installment of the series, it can be hard to keep track of the timeline. Below is a general overview of the series to help you brush up on your Alien knowledge to prepare for the premiere of Alien: Covenant.

Prometheus (2012)

Prometheus takes place 30 years before the first Alien movie (1979). Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan-Marshall Green) lead a team that are searching for the origins of humanity. They journey on the ship Prometheus and arrive on a distant world in the same region in which Alien is found. They discover the remains of an advanced civilization and terror elicited by a horrific alien race. This is not necessarily a prequel to Alien, but is set in the same universe.

Alien: Covenant (2017)

Alien: Covenant is set 10 years after Prometheus. A crew travels to an unexplored paradise hoping to find exactly that. They encounter sole inhabitant David (Michael Fassbender) and realize that the paradise they were hoping for is far, far from a utopia.

Alien (1979)

A commercial mining ship is heading back to Earth is diverted after receiving a signal from an unknown planetoid. The crew wakes to answer the signal only to find a destroyed ship laden with thousands of egg-like objects. One crew member approaches one of the eggs, it hatches, latches onto his face, and renders him unconscious. As the crew brings him onto the ship, the man wakes up seemingly fine but soon and alien bursts from his chest and grows rapidly and goes on a killing rampage.

Aliens (1986)

57 years after the first Alien encounter, sole survivor Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is found by a salvage team. Her horror story is not believed and when they arrive at LV-426, they find only one survivor, a 9-year old girl. But, this team of marines are no match for the aliens that has invaded the colony.

Alien 3 (1992)

Again, Ellen Ripley defeats the odds and escapes to a planet that is home to former inmates of the planet’s maximum security prison. Not much time has passed between Aliens and Alien 3. Unbeknownst to her, there were a few aliens aboard the ship she escaped on and before long, the aliens grow and hunt down anyone that crosses their path. They have no weapons nor technology of any kind and must battle the destructive creature.

Alien Resurrection (1997)

200 years later after Ellen Ripley died. A team of scientist clone Ellen Ripley by using genetic samples that were collected and remove the alien queen embryo that was growing inside of her. Attempting to revive the alien species, the scientists have no idea what they are in for as the aliens escape and destroy everything and everyone in their path.

By marrying horror and sci-fi, the Alien franchise paved a way to a new subgenre.
