New Braunfels' Stars & Stripes Drive-In presents... Glass

January 11th, 2019
Categories:

It’s an evening of twists and turns at New Braunfels' Stars and Stripes Drive-In as director M. Night Shyamalan delivers the third installment in a trilogy that’s been more than a decade in the making! Starring Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, and Samuel L. Jackson in the title role… it’s Glass!

It’s been almost 20 years since Jackson’s Elijah Price declared himself Mr. Glass at the surprise ending of the superhero film, Unbreakable. Despite eventually developing a huge following with audiences, the film was somewhat of a disappointment at the box office. This forced Shyamalan to shelve any hopes he might have had for a sequel and move on to other projects. The director, however, had a trick up his sleeve.

In the original script for Unbreakable, Shyamalan included a subplot where Willis’ David Dunn battled a character with multiple personalities. Ultimately, the subplot threw off the balance of the film and was cut, but not for good as the director would pick up the pieces years later and develop the story for Split. The thriller, starring James McAvoy, was a hit with audiences and box offices, and was regarded by many as Shyamalan’s triumphant return to form. This opened the door for the director to finally make the sequel to his now highly-acclaimed Unbreakable by reuniting it with his more recent hit.

In a climate now saturated with superhero films, it will be interesting to see the impact Glass has on the genre. One thing, however, is certain. When it comes to a M. Night Shyamalan film, expect the unexpected. Click the link below to get your tickets.

New Braunfels' Stars & Stripes Drive-In presents... Mary Poppins Returns

New Braunfels' Stars and Stripes Drive-In is serving up a sugary spoonful of nostalgia as everyone’s favorite nanny soars back to the big screen in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns!

The film, stressed by Disney as a sequel and not a remake, is set 20 years after the events of the original and tells the story of the magical Mary Poppins who, after all this time, has come back to help the Banks family once again. The film’s director Rob Marshall is certainly no stranger to musicals, having directed Disney’s 2014 adaptation of Into the Woods as well 2002’s Chicago for which he won an Academy Award. Joining Marshall in the film’s billing is a slew of other award winners. Lin-Manuel Miranda stars as the very Bert-esque Jack the Lamplighter. There’s Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, and of course, the great Emily Blunt as the practically perfect nanny herself! And as if all of that wasn’t enough to entice audiences, Mary Poppins Returns also sees the return of Dick Van Dyke as Mr. Dawes Jr., the son of Dyke’s elderly character from the original film, Mr. Dawes Sr.

Through the use of stunning visuals, whimsical dance numbers, and probably a talking cartoon animal or two, Mary Poppins Returns promises to be a long-awaited delight leaving audiences charmed and… tripping a little light fantastic! That’s the title of one of the film’s songs. To get the reference, just head to New Braunfels' Stars and Stripes and see Mary Poppins Returns! Click the link below to get your tickets today!

Jason Momoa returns to the big screen in Aquaman, a superhero movie based on the DC Comics character of the same name joined by stars including Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, and Willem Dafoe.  The new Aquaman movie was written by Will Beall and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, and directed by James Wan.

This action-packed film is the sixth installment in the DC Extended Universe Collection and is sure to give fans of other superhero movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League a memorable experience.  The character of Aquaman was featured in both of those DC Comics movies, but this is the first full-feature film centered around the story of Aquaman.

According to Rotten Tomatoes the new Aquaman movie is an, “adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, ‘Aquaman,’ starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime--one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be... a king.”  (Read More…)

Rated PG-13 for violence and language, families with smaller children should exercise caution when going to see the Aquaman movie in San Antonio.  Common Sense Media cautions, “Expect plenty of sci-fi action and violence, as well as romance and swearing, but this will likely be appropriate for mature tween and teen superhero fans.”

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is back… AGAIN! But this time, the “neighborhood” just got a lot more complicated. Swinging into New Braunfels' Stars and Stripes Drive-In, it’s Sony Animation’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse!

When several portals to alternate realities are opened, Miles Morales, a teen with newfound spider-like abilities must look to Peter Parker to show him the ropes… or webs… of being Spider-Man. However, Miles and Peter aren’t alone. Joining them are a host of other super-powered wall crawlers. First up is Spider-Gwen, a free-spirited heroine from a reality where Parker’s old flame Gwen Stacy is the one bitten by a radioactive spider. Next is Spider-Noir, a darker and grittier hero from the 1930’s who was, of course, also bitten by a radioactive spider. Then there’s Peni Parker, a young girl who pilots a robotic suit that is powered by… a radioactive spider, and finally the anthropomorphic Spider-Ham who is actually the result of a spider being bitten by a radioactive pig! That’s a lot of Spider-People!

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is the result of Sony Pictures’ long planned attempt to “rejuvenate” the Spider-Man franchise in an animated format and the filmmakers went all out for the occasion, developing a brand new style of animation that combines the proven techniques of 70-year-old comic art with modern CGI-animation.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is definitely the film to see and if you’re in the New Braunfels-verse, the Stars and Stripes Drive-In is the place to see it! Thwip the link below and get your tickets today!

We’re ringing in the Christmas season here at New Braunfels’ Stars & Stripes Drive-In with the newest adaptation of a holiday classic! From Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, it’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch!

Set in a world that can only be described as… ‘Seussical,’ this soon-to-be holiday classic dives into the origin of a despicable creature known as The Grinch who, along with his trusty canine sidekick Max, sets out to ruin Christmas for the festive citizens of Whoville. This marks the third adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book. The most recent was Universal’s live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey, which was itself a big screen remake of the Chuck Jones television special of the same name starring Boris Karloff. Illumination Entertainment is certainly no stranger to the works of Dr. Seuss. Their CEO Chris Melandri served as Executive Producer for Blue Sky Studios’ Horton Hears a Who! in 2008 before founding Illumination where he produced The Lorax in 2012.

Stepping into the role of the famous green meanie this time is none other than Benedict Cumberbatch. In addition to having a name that’s fun to say, Cumberbatch is also known for a variety of roles that are fun to watch. Marvel’s master of the mystic arts Doctor Strange and, most notably, the BBC’s modernized version of the world’s greatest detective Sherlock Holmes to name just a few. Also starring in The Grinch are Rashida Jones from Parks and Recreation, Keenan Thompson from Saturday Night Live, and film and television legend Angela Lansbury.

Halloween 2018 in New Braunfels

Following the 1978 horror-slasher film Halloween, this sequel is a continuation that throws out all nine of the Halloween movies of the past 40 years.  Co-written and directed by David Gordon Green, this film follows the characters Michael Myers, played by  P.J. Soles, and Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, as they seek to finish the evil business begun over four decades ago.  Horror film lovers in Austin will not want to miss this Halloween movie!

Families, especially those will small children, should take caution with this film.  It is rated R and is quite violent.  A complete family review is available on Common Sense Media where they recommend only those 17 and older catching this one.

The Halloween movie does convey the message of optimism and strength through the role Curtis plays as Laurie Strode. Viewers will see the importance of a positive will in life and how much this can help a person overcome a lot of bad circumstances.  Strode is a strong woman with a will to exact her revenge on Myers for what started 40 years earlier.   Common Sense Media says, “And, in perhaps the film's most significant break from tradition, the female characters -- while menaced by a male stalker -- are the smartest and strongest ones in the film. It's creepy, tense, fun; violent as hell; and downright feminist. This alternate-universe-sequel Halloween takes its place among the more respectable entries of the slasher genre.”
