The Avengers: Inifinity War

The Avengers: Infinity War

Everyone loves a good team: Batman and Robin, chips and queso, the Jackson 5. But when the Earth's mightiest superheroes come together, there is nothing quite like it. There have been over 18 different Marvel movies and they are all about to tie everything together with six gems and an overwhelming, cosmic villain in the latest Marvel hit, The Avengers: Infinity War.

More than any other Marvel movie, The Avengers: Infinity War features more good guys than any superhero cinematic project. Together, the good guys come together to attempt to beat Thanos, a massive villain wielding a legendary metal glove in search of six all-power infinity stones to give him unparalleled power.

Knowing that this movie is bringing together about 20 movie plots, here’s what do you need to know going into The Avengers: Infinity War.

1. Thanos

In the first Avengers film, Thanos appears at the end of the credits. He tasks Loki, Thor’s brother, to lead an army against Earth’s heroes. After a failed attempt by Loki, we see Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy where he assigns Ronan the Accuser to snag a mysterious Orb, but is again thwarted. Finally, Thanos takes destruction into his own hands and comes to our world to collect the infinity stones.

2. Infinity Stones

Infinity stones are an integral part of Infinity War. As a refresher, here are a few reminders of where we’ve seen them before. In Guardians of the Galaxy, The Collector explains that the stones date back to creation itself and are composed of cosmic power that can only be handled by people of extraordinary strength. These stones have different purposes. They are:
-Time Stone: Give the wielder control over time.
-Space Stone: Opens portals in space show possible visions of the future, and fuel dangerous weapons.
-Power Stone: This stone can wipe out an entire planet’s civilization (yikes).
-Reality Stone: Brings the dead back to life.
-Mind Stone: This stone allows the holder to control others.
-Soul Stone: This is the only stone that has not been introduced in the Marvel movies. Noone quite knows the purpose of it or the powers it holds, but we might soon figure it out in the upcoming movie.

3. Where does the movie begin?

Loki holds the space stone and the collector is assumed to have the reality stone. Additionally, the power stone is being guarded by space cops and Doctor Strange has the time stone housed in an amulet. The Mind stone is embedded into the forehead of, Vision, an Avenger. As for the Soul stone, it’s hard to know where it’s located. There are rumors it is in Wakanda, the high tech African country. The movie follows Thanos in pursuit of each of the stones. In order to protect all civilizations, superheroes band together to fight Thanos.

There’s a lot more to these intricate movies and it’s generally just a lot to take in. But it’s a basis to help refresh your experience with The Avengers and follow along in the new movie The Avengers: Infinity War. Be sure to grab your tickets at Stars and Stripes Movie Drive-In Movie Theatre here

The Avengers: Infinity War opens April 27.

Challenges with the Reboot of Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider is Back

In 2003, Lara Croft’s Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life hit movie theaters and was generally a flop in the eyes of video game lovers everywhere. Since then, we haven’t seen anything from the series. This March, Tomb Raider is back with a vengeance. Alicia Vikander plays a younger Lara Croft as she attempts to uncover the secrets behind her father’s disappearance – a plot line dear to the hearts of many.

This year’s release of Tomb Raider will explore Lara Croft’s journey as she transforms from a reckless, young girl into the iconic, fearless adventurer familiar to the gaming community. From designs of the characters to action sequences, fans of the series have already recognized that Tomb Raider will be incorporating elements from the video game.

Challenge with the Reboot of Tomb Raider

According to an article by Nerdist, “Hollywood has seemed to mastered the art of comic books, novels, and horrifying true stories for the big screen” but struggles “when it comes to video game movies” (Source). Many movie goers are predisposed to skepticism with the stigma associated with movie adaptations from video games.

With Oscar-winning actress, Alicia Vikandar as Lara Croft, it seems that the reboot is prepared to face the challenges head on. Vikander, like many of us, grew up playing these games and her passion for the role will hopefully prove helpful to the series. In an interview, Vikander explains that her goal was to capture the heart of Lara. She worked hard to accurately portray the essence of the character and the series while providing a story with a reality closer to our own.

Tomb Raider in Theaters March 15, 2018

Movie times for Tomb Raider are available here. Spend the last days of Spring Break at the Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theatre. With a nostalgic feel and incredible viewing capacity, it’s the perfect place to make memories.

Things you need to know before seeing A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time is the kind of novel that has a message for someone at any age. There are major themes, confidence boosting lessons, and a family story that focuses on intense issues that people must face in life.

To prepare for the upcoming movie and before you celebrate Spring Break, here are a few things you should know before you see A Wrinkle in Time in movie theaters

Long Time Coming

It’s been a long time coming for A Wrinkle in Time to hit movie theaters. Producer, Catherine Hand, read the book as a fifth-grader and made a promise to herself that she would bring the book to life on screen. 54 years later, that promise is coming to fruition as she partners with a revolutionary director.

Slight Changes

With every movie adaptation of a book, there are always changes. There are subtle differences like changing the time the father has been missing and updated references to bring the novel into 2018.

DuVernay

DuVernay is the first African American woman to direct movie with budget over 100 million. Breaking records, not only is she bringing life to a brilliant novel, but she knew from the beginning that she wanted to demand a diverse cast to play the iconic roles. She wanted the three witches to be “black, white, and one that wasn’t either” (Source).

Cameos

According to a report in Collider, L’Engle might make a subtle appearance in the film. Hint: Look carefully at the photographs that appear on screen. You might see a familiar face (Source).

Sequels

If you haven’t read the books, A Wrinkle in Time is the first novel in the series. There have been no discussions of sequels, but there is a high possibility depending on how the movie is received.

A Wrinkle in Time is a highly anticipated movie adaptation. Spring Break is approaching. Celebrate the end of a long day floating the river by watching A Wrinkle in Time at Stars and Stripes movie theater. We're open every day during Spring Break in New Braunfels. 15:17 to Paris

Clint Eastwood is known for his grit, outspoken nature, and self-efficacious movies. He’s back at it again with his latest 15:17 to Paris, a story of three men who discover a terrorist plot on a train to Paris. This time, he has the three heroes of the terrorist attack play themselves in the blockbuster hit.

The Heroes Behind the Title

Three friends were on a train to Paris when a man carrying an AK47, “the world’s most abundant fire arm…used for swiftly killing on a large scale,” launched an attack on innocent civilians traveling to France (Source).

When 25-year-old, Ayoub el-Khazzani boarded the train and shortly after the train left with 500 passengers, chaos ensued. Gun shots alerted the three friends, Anthony Sadler, 23, Alek Skarlatos, 22, and Spencer Stone, 23, who ultimately charged the perpetrator with nothing on them but bravery.

More about the 15:17 to Paris

Casting the three soldiers and others that were actually there that terrifying day brings a unique element to the screen. With accuracy and authenticity, Eastwood and the cast tell the story of courage that saved hundreds.

The three say that it’s their “responsibility to take the message and be responsible with it and spread it as much as we can so we don’t waste the opportunity that [God] gave us…The fact that we’re living, we’re meant to spread the story and it’s meant to touch people, and we’re the three people that were chosen to do that.”

In an article by the Guardian, Skarlatos said “It was act or die. There wasn’t any time to think about anything, because if you didn’t do anything, you’d end up dead. We just kind of went for it. We all thought we were going to die anyway; we were on a moving train with nowhere to go” (Source).

This inspiring story is sure to hit home in the hearts of the audience. 15:17 to Paris opens February 9th.

Movie Times for 15:17 to Paris - Be sure to catch this incredible movie while it’s on the big screen. Looking for what to do in New Braunfels? This telling story is showing at Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theatre. It's perfect for a date night in New Braunfels.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Two decades after the original Jumanji movie, the beloved board game has entered the world of technology and evolved into an (actually) immersive video game.

In Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, four high school kids are assigned to detention. As they clean the dingy basement of their school, they discover an old video game console. When they turn it on, they get sucked into the game and become adult avatars as they explore and attempt to beat the game.

Jumanji Characters

When they four students are sucked into the console, there is a Freaky Friday style change that happens to each of the kids: they are transformed to bodies that are very different than what they are used to.

Jack Black plays a young teenage girl name Bethany. She is completely addicted to her cell phone, herself, and the internet and turns into a short, bearded, male cryptographer. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the personal of a skinny nerd who has transformed into a buff explorer. While a jock loses a foot and a half of his height and becomes a zoologist played by Kevin Hart and a bookish, shy girl becomes a talented, gruff powerhouse of a woman.

In order to escape the game, they have to embrace their alter egos and each other as they learn to work together as a team.

What to Expect

Naturally, most people are hesitant when it comes to a sequel of a classic movie. But, what makes Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle appealing is that it doesn’t rely solely on the nostalgia of the 22-year-old predecessor. It has a standalone hook where 4 kids get sucked into a new world. With a new take on the beloved classic, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle swings into theaters with an all-star cast of comedic and likable stars.
