Gain some insight as to why we bring back retro movies every now and then!

Movies, new and retro
Meanwhile, Stars & Stripes Drive-In owner Ryan Smith also has created a Retro Weekend by bringing back three hit movies from the 1980s and making them available only Friday through Sunday.
The three returning hits are:

  • Steven Spielberg’s classic “ET., The Extra-Terrestrial,” the filmmaker’s children’s-film-for-adults released in 1982.
  • Richard Donner’s comedy-turned-cult-favorite “The Goonies,” released in 1985.
  • Tim Burton’s hilarious “Beetlejuice,” with Michael Keaton in the title role, released in 1988.

“As drive-in theater enthusiasts, we celebrate the start of autumn because we can enjoy earlier show times, cooler weather and retro movies under the stars that we cannot show during the summer season. These retro ‘80s movies were selected because they are full of adventure, laughs – and many of our guests grew up watching them, but never have experienced them outdoors on a huge drive-in screen,” Smith said.
“We’re looking forward to sharing something old and something new with family and friends this weekend.”
Admission price for each double feature: $8 for general public age 12 and older, $5 for children between ages 4 and 11, with children age 3 and younger free.
Specific screening times this weekend at the Stars & Stripes Drive-In:
On Screen One:
Animated family comedy “Abominable” will be shown at 7:50 p.m.. It will be followed on the same screen at 9:50 p.m. by “E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial.”
On Screen Three:
“The Goonies,” which costars John Matuszak as “Sloth” Fratelli, will be screened at approximately 8 p.m. It will be followed on the same screen at 10:20 p.m. by “Beetlejuice.”

The Avengers: Inifinity War

The Avengers: Infinity War

Everyone loves a good team: Batman and Robin, chips and queso, the Jackson 5. But when the Earth's mightiest superheroes come together, there is nothing quite like it. There have been over 18 different Marvel movies and they are all about to tie everything together with six gems and an overwhelming, cosmic villain in the latest Marvel hit, The Avengers: Infinity War.

More than any other Marvel movie, The Avengers: Infinity War features more good guys than any superhero cinematic project. Together, the good guys come together to attempt to beat Thanos, a massive villain wielding a legendary metal glove in search of six all-power infinity stones to give him unparalleled power.

Knowing that this movie is bringing together about 20 movie plots, here’s what do you need to know going into The Avengers: Infinity War.

1. Thanos

In the first Avengers film, Thanos appears at the end of the credits. He tasks Loki, Thor’s brother, to lead an army against Earth’s heroes. After a failed attempt by Loki, we see Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy where he assigns Ronan the Accuser to snag a mysterious Orb, but is again thwarted. Finally, Thanos takes destruction into his own hands and comes to our world to collect the infinity stones.

2. Infinity Stones

Infinity stones are an integral part of Infinity War. As a refresher, here are a few reminders of where we’ve seen them before. In Guardians of the Galaxy, The Collector explains that the stones date back to creation itself and are composed of cosmic power that can only be handled by people of extraordinary strength. These stones have different purposes. They are:
-Time Stone: Give the wielder control over time.
-Space Stone: Opens portals in space show possible visions of the future, and fuel dangerous weapons.
-Power Stone: This stone can wipe out an entire planet’s civilization (yikes).
-Reality Stone: Brings the dead back to life.
-Mind Stone: This stone allows the holder to control others.
-Soul Stone: This is the only stone that has not been introduced in the Marvel movies. Noone quite knows the purpose of it or the powers it holds, but we might soon figure it out in the upcoming movie.

3. Where does the movie begin?

Loki holds the space stone and the collector is assumed to have the reality stone. Additionally, the power stone is being guarded by space cops and Doctor Strange has the time stone housed in an amulet. The Mind stone is embedded into the forehead of, Vision, an Avenger. As for the Soul stone, it’s hard to know where it’s located. There are rumors it is in Wakanda, the high tech African country. The movie follows Thanos in pursuit of each of the stones. In order to protect all civilizations, superheroes band together to fight Thanos.

There’s a lot more to these intricate movies and it’s generally just a lot to take in. But it’s a basis to help refresh your experience with The Avengers and follow along in the new movie The Avengers: Infinity War. Be sure to grab your tickets at Stars and Stripes Movie Drive-In Movie Theatre here

The Avengers: Infinity War opens April 27.

Challenges with the Reboot of Tomb Raider

March 14th, 2018

Tomb Raider is Back

In 2003, Lara Croft’s Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life hit movie theaters and was generally a flop in the eyes of video game lovers everywhere. Since then, we haven’t seen anything from the series. This March, Tomb Raider is back with a vengeance. Alicia Vikander plays a younger Lara Croft as she attempts to uncover the secrets behind her father’s disappearance – a plot line dear to the hearts of many.

This year’s release of Tomb Raider will explore Lara Croft’s journey as she transforms from a reckless, young girl into the iconic, fearless adventurer familiar to the gaming community. From designs of the characters to action sequences, fans of the series have already recognized that Tomb Raider will be incorporating elements from the video game.

Challenge with the Reboot of Tomb Raider

According to an article by Nerdist, “Hollywood has seemed to mastered the art of comic books, novels, and horrifying true stories for the big screen” but struggles “when it comes to video game movies” (Source). Many movie goers are predisposed to skepticism with the stigma associated with movie adaptations from video games.

With Oscar-winning actress, Alicia Vikandar as Lara Croft, it seems that the reboot is prepared to face the challenges head on. Vikander, like many of us, grew up playing these games and her passion for the role will hopefully prove helpful to the series. In an interview, Vikander explains that her goal was to capture the heart of Lara. She worked hard to accurately portray the essence of the character and the series while providing a story with a reality closer to our own.
