Tomb Raider is Back

In 2003, Lara Croft’s Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life hit movie theaters and was generally a flop in the eyes of video game lovers everywhere. Since then, we haven’t seen anything from the series. This March, Tomb Raider is back with a vengeance. Alicia Vikander plays a younger Lara Croft as she attempts to uncover the secrets behind her father’s disappearance – a plot line dear to the hearts of many.

This year’s release of Tomb Raider will explore Lara Croft’s journey as she transforms from a reckless, young girl into the iconic, fearless adventurer familiar to the gaming community. From designs of the characters to action sequences, fans of the series have already recognized that Tomb Raider will be incorporating elements from the video game.

Challenge with the Reboot of Tomb Raider

According to an article by Nerdist, “Hollywood has seemed to mastered the art of comic books, novels, and horrifying true stories for the big screen” but struggles “when it comes to video game movies” (Source). Many movie goers are predisposed to skepticism with the stigma associated with movie adaptations from video games.

With Oscar-winning actress, Alicia Vikandar as Lara Croft, it seems that the reboot is prepared to face the challenges head on. Vikander, like many of us, grew up playing these games and her passion for the role will hopefully prove helpful to the series. In an interview, Vikander explains that her goal was to capture the heart of Lara. She worked hard to accurately portray the essence of the character and the series while providing a story with a reality closer to our own.
