There is something special about going to a drive-in theater – something nostalgic, something classic. The idea of the drive-in theater started in 1933, though they didn’t gain in popularity until the ‘50s, after World War II. At one point in our history, there were 5,000 drive-ins across the United States. Now there are less than 500. Why the decline? We spoke with Ryan Smith, the owner of the Lubbock Stars & Stripes Drive-In.

Stars & Stripes goes all the way back to 1948 when Ryan’s grandfather started the Sky-Vue Drive-In Theatre in Lamesa, Texas. Ryan was forever changed by his experiences at that drive-in. Stars & Stripes opened in 2003 as a double feature drive-in theater. The popularity of the drive-in was back and another screen was built a few years later. Stars & Stripes even opened a location in New Braunsfels.

The drive-in is a great destination for families, date nights, friend night, or really for anyone. You decide the atmosphere of the night. Stars & Stripes is enjoyed by people young and old because they have the freedom to customize their experience (like sitting inside vs. setting up a lawn chair) all at a great price.

The theater allows you to bring in your own food and drinks, but there’s a ‘50s style diner with excellent food. We recommend the chili cheese hot dog with a chocolate shake. The menu is vast. You have the typical theater food: popcorn, candy, and soda, but you could also chow down on chicken fingers, pizza, Frito pies, hamburgers, and, of course, ice cream.

While Ryan is working on conquering another location in the hill country later this year, he is excited for the future of our Stars & Stripes. The growth in northwest Lubbock generates more traffic on North Slide, which runs along the west side of the drive-in’s property. Be on the lookout for additional seating and a covered patio!

Get to the movie a little early so that you can get the perfect spot right in the middle and a few rows back. Walk over to the park area and let your kiddos burn off some energy before your movie begins. These Lubbock summer evenings are perfect for a night at the drive-in.  The theater is located at 5101 Clovis Hwy. in Lubbock. Visit www.driveinusa.com for show times.

Buffett concert to be broadcast live on June 19 at Stars and Stripes

A-J MEDIA ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

Jimmy Buffett told reporters that he “grew up going to drive-in movies,” which is the primary reason he and his Coral Reefer Band will perform a full-length concert on June 19 at the Coyote Drive-In Theater, 223 N.E. Fourth St. in Fort Worth.

Buffett is touring in support of his 2013 album “Songs from St. Somewhere.”

Traveling with a professional film crew, Buffett’s concert will be broadcast live at more than 170 other digital drive-in cinemas nationwide, including at 9:30 p.m. June 19 the Stars and Stripes Drive-In, 5101 U.S. 84 in Lubbock.

Tickets for the concert, called “Live at the Drive-In,” are $18 per person for the Lubbock screening, with children age 3 and younger admitted free.

Gates at the Lubbock drive-in theater open at 7 p.m. on June 19.

The concert is open to all ages, but tickets are not being sold at the Stars and Stripes’ box office. Rather, tickets are on sale online by clicking on Show Times at Tickets.DriveInUSA.com. The local drive-in utilizes radio sound.

Ryan Smith, Stars and Stripes owner, said, “If arriving in one vehicle, please purchase your tickets in one transaction. If arriving in separate vehicles, please complete one transaction per vehicle. Example: three cars would need three transactions.

“Also, we are asking everyone to please arrive 45 minutes before show time to guarantee admittance. The earlier that a person arrives, the more parking choices will be available.”

Call 749-7469 for more details.

Fans paid $125 per person to attend the sold out concert at the Coyote in Fort Worth.

Aside from the Stars and Stripes in Lubbock, the concert will be shown at only three other drive-in theaters in Texas. They are the Big Sky Drive-In in Midland, the Galaxy Drive-In in Ennis and the Sky-Vue Drive-In in Tyler.

Buffett, born on Christmas Day in 1946, is 67. He began recording his carefree country-folk albums after relocating to Key West, Fla., in the early 1970s.

Just a few of his popular songs include “Margaritaville,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Fins,” “Come Monday,” “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” “Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude,” “Pencil Thin Mustache,” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk” and “Grapefruit, Juicy Fruit.”

His fans refer to themselves as Parrotheads.
