Our Favorite Movie Moms

Maternal love can be a powerful force. In honor Bad Moms Christmas release, we have compiled a list of our favorite movie moms.

Maria – Sound of Music

Shout out to Step Moms! Maria Von Trap is one of our favorite movie moms with her resilient patience and her angelic singing voice that could put any grown man or woman to sleep.

Mrs. George – Mean Girls

In Mean Girls, Amy Poehler plays Mrs. George, the classic satirical mother who is dying to be young again. While her velour track suit and outrageous personality causes your eyes to roll out onto the floor, Mrs. George is a mom we’ve all experienced and is surprisingly more likable than you would initially expect.

Leigh Anne Tuohy - The Blind Side

Talk about a power house. Leigh Anne Tuohy has a feisty, strong-willed, and dedicated personality that reveals that motherhood knows no bounds. After watching the Blind Side, you will be left inspired and on fire for justice.

Molly Weasley – Harry Potter

Molly Weasley raises seven kids with gentle ferocity. She is loving, intense, and the quintessential mother figure.

In the last Harry Potter movie, Molly Weasley takes a stand against Bellatrix Lestrange, an evil wizard trying to kill everyone in her path, including Molly Weasley’s daughter. Needless to say, Mrs. Weasley didn’t sit idly by. Her maternal love not only depicts an incredible picture of a mother’s love, but led to one of the most incredible Harry Potter scenes of all time.

Bad Moms

Suburban moms know how to have a good time. Albeit slightly terrifying, we love all the moms in Bad Mom and the sequel, Bad Moms Christmas. We can all admit that we have some lofty expectations for our parents, but moms are people too. Bad Moms is a fun way to appreciate their wild side.

Bad Moms Christmas is out today. Celebrate with your mom friends at Stars and Stripes Drive in Movie Theatre.

Who are your favorite movie moms?

A tale as old as time deserves to have an event to remember. Our first event rolled out the red carpet for Princess Belle! With free face painting, pictures with Belle, and a premiere opening, it was a night to remember.

Cars Face Painting
To celebrate the third movie in the Cars trilogy, we celebrated with some incredible face painting.

Despicable Me Red Carpet
We were honored to have TWO minions come to our red-carpet event for Despicable Me 3! Face painting was such a hit the first two times that we couldn’t resist doing it again. It was a great way to spend a night at the movies.

14th Annual Guest Appreciation
For 14 years, YOU guys have kept us in business and going strong! To celebrate and show how much we love you, we had a $14 Dollar Car Load night at the end of August! Tickets are normally 8 dollars a person, but we discounted the prices to $14 per car so you could bring as many friends and family as you could fit! There are people who say there isn’t much to do in Lubbock, but Lubbock has so much to offer! We are glad to provide fun summer events for you and your family to enjoy! We love our city and want to give back as much as we can. We can’t wait to see what fall has in store and what Summer 2018 brings!

IT

Horror movies have mastered the art of making everyday things terrifying. Showers, Hallways, telephone calls, mirrors, the list goes on. But, what the genre has truly perfected is making childhood toys and entertainment the creepiest elements possible. Do you cringe when you hear a nursery rhyme or see a porcelain doll? Initially, these things were innocent entertainment pieces. Now, their innocence is warped and mangled.

Clowns are a classic example. What comes to your mind when you think of clowns? It probably isn’t laughter and joy. Stephen King’s horror novel, IT, sparked fear into the hearts of many when he capitalized on the idea of the cheery mask hiding a true sinister persona.

In Medieval culture, clowns were a popular form of entertainment to bring humor into everyday situations. In most literature, like the fool in Shakespeare’s King Lear, there was always a disturbing truth that was masked by the clown’s humor. Horror thrives on hyperbole so, when you mix the original intention of clowns with a sinister spin, the clown becomes an ideal petrifying archetype. Remember, no one has a permanent smile except for The Joker.

The highly anticipated remake of the 1990 horror classic, IT, arrives in theaters the first week of September.

Synopsis of IT

When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, neighborhood kids band together to square off against Pennywise, an evil clown whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.” (IMDB).

Movie Times for IT

IT is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2017. What better way to watch a scary movie than outside at Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theatre in Lubbock? We have movie times for IT available today.

Opening This Week – Annabelle: Creation, The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature

Annabelle: Creation

Anxiously awaiting the fourth film in The Conjuring series? Annabelle: Creation opens this week and has been described as a movie that “finally gets it right for the living doll.”

Annabelle: Creation is the origin story of the demonic doll, who was introduced in the 2013 movie, The Conjuring. The Conjuring was widely received as a success, while Annabelle fell short of audience expectations. Luckily, the Annabelle: Creation has given the spin off series hope.

Annabelle, a beloved 7-year-old daughter of Sam and Esther Mullins, is killed in a tragic car accident.  Several years later, the grieving couple welcome in a group of Catholic, orphaned girls into their home as a haven after their orphanage is unlivable. In no time, Janice and her BFF Linda, stumble upon the dead daughter’s old bedroom and find a doll that has taken on a life of its own.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature

For those of you that are looking for something a little lighter, The Nut Job 2 is a great option. The Nut Job 2 is a sequel to the hit animated movie, The Nut Job (2014). Surly, the purple squirrel and his park animal friends inhabit a new, luscious park. Soon, they are over powered by a corrupt mayor who wants to bulldoze their beloved home replace it with an amusement park. To save their new home from the corrupt mayor, Surly enlists the help from a street gang of mice to help thwart the Mayor’s plan and save their home.

With an all-star cast starring Will Arnett, Jackie Chan, Maya Rudolph, and more, The Nut Job 2 is bound to be a great successor in The Nut Job series.

Make your movie night a memorable one at Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theatre.  Check out movie times for Annabelle: Creation and The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature.

Dunkirk: The Story Behind the Story

Dunkirk: The Story Behind the Story

Opens July 21. Movie Times for Dunkirk Here.

The “Miracle of Dunkirk” was the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France in early World War II. Hundreds of thousands of Belgian, British, and French troops were trapped between German forces and experts at the time predicted that only 45,000 would be saved. The operation began May 26, 1940 as Germans closed in on France.

Dunkirk was a horrendous display of the tragedies of war. The allied troops were like sitting ducks on the beaches of France as Germans dropped bombs upon bombs on the coast of France. In an article in Time Magazine that originally reported the incident in 1940 explained that “day and night the sea air was filled with screaming gulls and bats of death.” These tragic circumstances not only effected the soldiers, but also the citizens of Dunkirk, “as thousands of refugees fled for their lives to escape the fallout of battle.”

Approximately, 338,000 allied soldiers were rescued on small civilian ferries from the small seaport town of Dunkirk in just 8 days. The evacuation has been referred to as one of the greatest turning points in World War II as only 45,000 were expected to be saved.

Tragically, thousands and thousands of troops were left behind and taken prisoner by advancing Germans. In Winston Churchill’s famous speech, he explained that "this unprecedented German achievement constitutes simultaneously the greatest military defeat that any military forces ever suffered” -  the true paradox of war. The troops that were saved “would play a crucial role in future resistance of Nazi Germany” and became the spirit of battle in World War II.

Christopher Nolan, renowned director of The Dark Knight, brings this tragic story to the big screen with a powerful retelling of the horrors of war. Considered a psychological thriller, Dunkirk is a shattering spectacle of the chaotic evacuation of allied forces from France. There is supposedly no mention of Nazi forces in the movie as to express a holistic and universal portrayal of the horrors of war.

Dunkirk has been described by one of the best movies of the year, earning a whopping 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. You don’t want to miss this. Check out movie times for Dunkirk at Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theatre here

Spiderman Homecoming - Free Facepainting

There is nothing quite as jarring as the merging of worlds. Whether it’s your new beau or belle meeting your family or eating chocolate covered bacon, it’s hard to forget when you see or taste something you have never experienced before- when two different worlds come together.

That’s kind of what it was like when Marvel dove into the world of live-action remakes. Bringing comics to life is bringing the fantastical into reality. The fantasy becomes tangible and is no longer simply a fantasy.

People are very protective when an actor or actress is cast as their beloved comic book character. The young Spiderman makes an appearance in Captain America and luckily, the new Spidey quickly won us over. But, what we really love about Tom Holland’s roll is how he perfectly embodies the awkward tween persona that is as lovable as a puppy.

In Spiderman Homecoming, Peter lands an ‘internship’ with Stark Enterprises. Tony Stark, who is also Iron Man, begins to teach young Peter the ways of an Avenger as the young hero begins to embrace his new-found identity. With every teenager, there is a natural rebellion that occurs and becomes a big theme throughout the movie. As Peter learns more about his powers, he attempts to balance school life with his super hero responsibilities. Soon, he is put to the test when the evil Vulture threatens everything he loves.

Critics are raving about this new film and it is sure to be a huge hit. In fact, to celebrate we are having ANOTHER summer event at Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theater. We will be having a retro red-carpet event with FREE face painting and photos with Spiderman! From 7-9pm on July 7th & 8th in LUBBOCK.

At Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theater, we believe that a movie experience should be more than simply seeing a movie. It’s a memory. We want to help make your time with us a fun and unforgettable night for your family.

Not only are you getting an entertainment filled night, you get two movies for the price of one! And we have the coolest combo of movies around: Spiderman Homecoming and Wonder Woman. This is a once in a lifetime chance to watch these incredible super heroes back-to-back on the big screen! Check out our show times for Spiderman Homecoming and Wonder Woman here!

Minion Meet & Greet for Despicable Me 3

Despicable Me 3 is coming out this Friday and it’s one of the biggest family films of the summer. Gru is back and better than ever with his 3 adorable girls and his minions that function like his 3000 additional children.

Despicable Me 3 is the 3rd movie installment in the Despicable Me series. The franchise “has grossed over $955 million domestically and 2.7 billion worldwide with the first three movies (including spinoff Minions).” Despicable Me 3 was an inevitable next step and is expected to smash the box office.

What’s Despicable Me 3 About?

After failing to capture the most wanted villain Balthazaar Bratt, Gru and his wife Lucy are fired from the Anti-Villain League. Soon after, he learns that he has a long-lost twin. With an abundance of new found time, Gru travels to Freedonia to meet Dru. Dru is a blonde-haired version of Gru and tries to convince Gru to join the dark side again. Sibling rivalry ensues and the lovable villain gone good, Gru, has to face his sibling, a former 80s child star villain, and what he wants his own future to look like.

Steve Carrell plays dual roles in this movie as both Dru and Gru. South Park’s star Trey Parker joins the all-star cast of Kristen Wiig Miranda Cosgrove, Russel Brand, Jenny Slate and more! There is so much to love about animated movies and their random love of hodgepodge casting.

Meet a Minion Red Carpet Event

To celebrate this beloved series, we are having a minion red carpet event on Friday, June 30th and Saturday June 31st! Be sure to arrive early to Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theater with your family, grab some food, meet your favorite minions, and watch the premiere of Despicable Me 3!

Why Going to the Drive-in Movie Theater is the Cutest Date Idea in Lubbock: A Biased Perspective

Why Going to the Drive-in Movie Theater is the Cutest Date Idea in Lubbock: A Biased Perspective

In 1933, the first drive in movie theater opened in Camden, NJ. By the 1950s, the number of drive-ins sky rocketed to 4,000. Today, there are less than 400 still running in the United States. Yet, like a resilient super hero, Drive-In theaters refuse to die and to this day remain the quintessential, cute date night idea in Lubbock, Texas.

Don’t believe us? Let us convince you. Here are our reasons why going to the drive-in movie theater is the cutest date idea in Lubbock:

1. Novelty

Simply going to the drive-in movie theater in itself is just cool. How neat is it to take part in a 1950s pastime?

2. Sunsets Galore

Image result for simba timon and pumbaa sunset gif

Nothing screams date night like watching the sunset. Going to the drive-in is a double whammy. It is the ideal place to watch a sunset AND you get to watch a movie. In fact, Stars and Stripes Lubbock was voted Best Place to Watch a Sunset in Lubbock by Avalanche Journal: The Best of Lubbock 2017 AND the Daily Toreador awarded us the Best Place to Take a Date – so you don’t have to just take our word for it.

3. Public Place, Private Space

Most of the time, dates require leaving the house. Drive-in Movie theaters marry the public nature of a date and almost the same intimacy as you have on your couch. And yes, people have brought couches. You can customize your experience to your liking: Open the back hatch or set up chairs/inflatable mattress in the bed of a pickup.

4. Unique Experience

When you go on a date night in Lubbock to Stars and Stripes, you aren’t simply going to a movie. You are going to 1 out of only 17 drive-in theaters in Texas. It’s a unique experience that most towns don’t have.

5. Two Movies for the Price of One

Not only the drive-in a great date night – it’s a cheap one! 8 dollars per person for two movies? Yes please.

6. Rockin' Eats & Tasty Treats

Who doesn’t love the dancing popcorn and soda in the staple Let’s All Go to the Lobby preview? Honestly, the advertising did its job because that popcorn looks delectable. Drive-ins have an awesome concession selection – not to mention the incredible ambiance at Stars and Stripes 50’s themed cafe. We have a robust menu and we don’t charge as much!

7. It’s F-U-N

Good Housekeeping rated Stars and Stripes the most underrated attraction in Texas saying that “the simple pleasure of watching a movie from your car can be far more enjoyable” than sitting in a movie theater. It’s a fun and comfortable experience for everyone.

8. Local Lovin’

Skip out on the lame corporate experience. Drive-in’s provide a personal and relational aspect to a special night out and you will be supporting local business!

Plan your next date night in Lubbock at Stars and Stripes. You won’t be disappointed.

What We are Excited to See in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

What We are Excited to See in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

On May 5th, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is zooming into Lubbock theaters and we could not be more excited. Last year, the Hollywood Reporter quotes that Guardians of the Galaxy was projected to gross $65 million, but smashed the box office expectations with a 94.3 million dollar US 2014 opening weekend debut.

With opening day of the highly-anticipated sequel creeping around the corner, we thought we would share a few things we are excited to see in Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2:

1. STINKIN’ CUTE BABY GROOT

This one is obvious because everyone just about lost their minds when they saw the adorable sapling sprout in place of beloved Groot. We can’t get enough of this cuddly, baby, tree creature. For you Baby Groot skeptics out there, according to an article in Polygon director James Gunn states that making “Groot a baby was never a marketing ploy. Instead, Gunn said that he has troubles writing an adult Groot for the sequel” and that Baby Groot molded easily into the group.

Well, we can’t saw were mad about it. And we aren’t mad at they decided to put a tiny outfit onto his tiny, branchy body.

2. A Killer Soundtrack

In the first movie, the nostalgic, cassette mixtape had everyone over the age of 30 exuding soft giggles and reminiscent sighs of yesteryear. “Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2,” Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2’s soundtrack is bound to be an awesome partner to the first. If their trailer theme song, The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, is a taste of what is to come, give us a heaping plate full and about 20 extra servings.

3. Family Oriented Sentiment

We are suckers for the plot line that focuses on a squad of misfit characters teaming up to save the world. There is something so relatable about the hodgepodge of characters, their quirky personalities, and their bantering group dynamic. Its familial feel broadens the definition of family.

Also, we are interested to see what the father/son relationship looks like between Peter Quill and Ego, the (quite literal) Living Planet. Hmm…

4. Yo, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell

Although Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone won’t be sharing the screen together like they did in Tango & Cash, we are excited to see these stars added to the impressive cast list. With slight mystery around Stallone’s character and Kurt Russell as a literal astronomical force, it only adds to the anticipation.

We hope you are as excited as we are. Don’t just go to a regular movie theater in Lubbock to watch this epic movie. Watch Guardians with us at Stars and Stripes Drive-In Movie Theater in Lubbock. Get your tickets today.

See you soon!
